Star Citizen Spinoff Squadron 42 Has Been Delayed Yet Again, Citing Everyone Going Gaga For GTA 6, Even If It Isn't Coming To PC Yet

Cloud Imperium Games has delayed the single-player Star Citizen spinoff, Squadron 42, from its late 2026 target to the second quarter of 2027. Studio head Chris Roberts explained that the team wants to avoid competing with the massive media attention surrounding the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, even though Rockstar's title is not initially releasing on PC.

The long-delayed single-player space adventure Squadron 42 has slipped once again. Developer Cloud Imperium Games has officially pushed the release window for the Star Citizen spinoff from late 2026 into the second quarter of 2027. The decision marks yet another chapter in the incredibly lengthy development history of the project, which has been in the works for over a decade.

In a recent blog post, studio head Chris Roberts addressed the schedule change directly. He noted that during CitizenCon 2024, the developer had committed to a 2026 launch, with internal plans aiming for a release in the fourth quarter around the time of the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo. However, those plans have been abandoned to avoid a direct clash with one of the entertainment industry's most anticipated releases.

Roberts explicitly cited the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 as the primary reason for the delay. He expressed a strong desire to protect the game from what he described as the media attention buzz saw of Rockstar's next title. The studio head emphasized that twelve years of intense effort, blood, sweat, and tears have been poured into creating this spiritual successor to Wing Commander, making a rushed or overshadowed launch highly undesirable.

Even though Grand Theft Auto 6 is not scheduled to debut on PC this November, Roberts believes its cultural footprint will dominate the landscape. He pointed out that almost all media outlets and online content creators will be heavily focused on the Rockstar release. This overwhelming concentration of coverage would leave very little room for other games, including Squadron 42, to garner the spotlight.

Active development on Squadron 42 originally commenced in 2014, following a year of studio establishment, recruitment, and the release of Star Citizen's Hangar module in 2013. The game was initially projected to launch in 2014, meaning this latest delay pushes its release to more than a dozen years past its original target date. Over the years, the project has become famous for its prolonged production cycle and ambitious scope.

Despite the delay, some players will get an early taste of the game in the near future. Cloud Imperium Games plans to host a limited playtest on October 9th and 10th, granting access to a select group of original crowdfunding backers and prominent Star Citizen content creators. The studio also intends to share more details regarding its launch strategy and announce a firm release date shortly after this event.

When it eventually arrives, Squadron 42 is set to feature a remarkably high-profile Hollywood voice cast. The game's lineup includes prominent actors such as Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and Henry Cavill. Additionally, comedy actor Eric Wareheim is slated to appear in the space-faring campaign, adding to the project's eclectic and star-studded ensemble.
