Double Fine Will Finally Make Brutal Legend 2, But Only If Its New Kickstarter Campaign Reaches An Almost Impossible $100m

Double Fine has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its Amnesia Fortnight 2026 game jam, featuring a tongue-in-cheek $100 million stretch goal to develop Brutal Legend 2. The studio recently regained its independence from Xbox.

Nearly twenty years after releasing its original heavy-metal-themed open-world game, Double Fine has announced it will develop Brutal Legend 2, but only under one highly improbable condition. The studio has set a massive $100 million (approximately #74 million) stretch goal on its newly launched Kickstarter campaign. While the prospect of a sequel has long been anticipated by fans, the astronomical funding target suggests the developer is maintaining its trademark sense of humor rather than presenting a realistic financial expectation.

The crowdfunding initiative follows a major transition for the studio. Earlier this summer, Double Fine separated from Xbox ownership. This departure occurred alongside a broader restructuring by the console manufacturer, which announced plans to cut 3,200 jobs over the subsequent year. As part of these changes, four first-party Xbox studios shifted ownership, allowing Double Fine to reclaim its independent status. Crucially, the developer also secured the complete rights to its historical catalog of intellectual properties, which includes Psychonauts, Kiln, and Brutal Legend.

Rather than being solely about a major sequel, the primary focus of the new Kickstarter campaign is to fund 'Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Indie Reboot.' This initiative is a two-week internal game jam designed to foster creative experimentation. The project aims to eventually produce a retail-ready game, accompanied by an in-depth, behind-the-scenes documentary produced by 2 Player Productions, the team previously responsible for the acclaimed PsychOdyssey series.

The ambitious $100 million target for Brutal Legend 2 is positioned as the second stretch goal on the campaign page, following the initial funding milestone. To put this figure into perspective, the most successful Kickstarter campaign in history generated $46 million for a 3D printer. Within the video game sector, the record is held by Shenmue 3, which raised $6.3 million. Currently, Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight campaign has accumulated over #236,000 toward its initial goal of #295,399.

The Amnesia Fortnight tradition began at Double Fine in 2007. During this two-week period, staff members temporarily halt their standard responsibilities to pitch unconventional game concepts to one another, vote on their favorites, and build working prototypes. Historically, this process has served as the birthplace for several of the studio's notable releases, including Costume Quest, Iron Brigade, and Kiln.

For the 2026 iteration, backers of the crowdfunding campaign will have the opportunity to vote on four distinct concepts from a pool of 26 pitches, which feature eccentric working titles such as Lesbian Sled Death, Friendslap, and Brouroboros. These selected ideas will be developed into small, playable prototypes over a fortnight. Ultimately, one of these prototypes will be selected for full development and published as a commercial release under the studio's new publishing imprint, Double Fine Action Labs.
