Mortal Shell 2 Dramatically Improved In Almost Every Way By First Major Update

Developer Cold Symmetry has released a massive first update for Mortal Shell 2 on Steam, with console versions coming soon. The patch addresses major launch criticisms by overhauling the game's economy, introducing infinite resources for character progression, rebalancing combat, and adjusting save point distribution to encourage player experimentation.

Just over a week after its initial launch, Mortal Shell 2 has received its most significant update yet. Developer Cold Symmetry released the patch on Steam on Saturday, with PlayStation and Xbox versions scheduled to follow shortly. The update represents a comprehensive effort by the studio to address widespread player feedback, implementing sweeping changes that touch upon nearly every core system in the dark action-RPG.

A primary focus of the update is a complete overhaul of the game's previously restrictive economy. Prior to the patch, players criticized the slow acquisition rates of various currencies, which severely limited their ability to experiment with different weapons and "Shells"—the game's distinct character classes. By making key progression resources far more abundant, the developers hope to foster a more open and experimental playstyle.

To resolve these progression bottlenecks, the patch introduces new items that make previously scarce resources infinite. Players can now acquire Glimpse Stones, which shatter into Glimpses after a set number of enemies are defeated. Because Glimpses were previously finite, players were blocked from fully upgrading every Shell in a single run. Additionally, new Fragile Tarstones provide a Tarcore upon breaking, allowing players to continuously upgrade their Tarstones—items that function similarly to rings in other Soulslike titles.

To further promote experimentation, Cold Symmetry has introduced a new respec item called Mether's Severance. This item allows players to sever their bond with a specific Shell, instantly refunding all Glimpses previously invested into that class. Furthermore, Tarstone upgrades now yield a higher volume of Tarcores. To ensure early adopters are not penalized, the developers have retroactively deposited extra Tarcores into the inventories of players who had already upgraded their gear prior to the patch.

The update also targets the physical layout of the game world by adjusting the placement of Beacons, which serve as the game's checkpoints and leveling hubs. Launch players noted that these checkpoints were unevenly distributed, leaving some zones oversaturated while others felt punishingly barren. In response, the developer has placed brand-new Beacons throughout the Fainweald and Mammon regions. To ease the tension of dungeon crawling, a new item called Egon's Stone has been added, which teleports players back to a dungeon's entrance upon death rather than a distant Beacon, while also protecting their accumulated Gloom currency for a limited number of uses.

Combat balance has received equal attention in this update, with the developers rebalancing the entire roster of Shells and the game's full arsenal of weaponry. Several major boss encounters have been tuned, with some bosses receiving entirely new attacks that were missing at launch. Additionally, the game's parry-and-riposte mechanic has been overhauled. Riposte damage now scales properly with enemy health in late-game stages, New Game Plus, and Night Mode, while the invulnerability frames during these high-damage animations have been widened for more consistent protection.
