GTA 5's Michael Actor Defends GTA 6 After Doubters Say Rockstar's Games Look Too Similar

Ned Luke, the actor who portrayed Michael De Santa in Grand Theft Auto 5, has strongly dismissed criticisms that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 looks too similar to its predecessor. Pointing to massive technological leaps in character movement, vehicle details, and overall visual quality, Luke argued that the new game's graphics easily surpass both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

The voice and motion-capture actor behind one of Grand Theft Auto 5's main characters has stepped forward to defend the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 from online skeptics. Ned Luke, who played the professional criminal Michael De Santa in the 2013 blockbuster, recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming sequel during a collaborative appearance with the YouTube channels House of Highlights and Partychat. His comments come in response to a wave of online criticism claiming that the next installment does not look like a significant step forward.

Following the release of a fresh preview titled "GTA 6: Extended Look," some internet commentators began arguing that the gameplay featuring new protagonists Jason and Lucia closely resembled the experience of playing Grand Theft Auto 5. Despite the thirteen-year gap between the releases of the two titles, a vocal minority of skeptics expressed doubt over whether Rockstar Games had truly evolved its formula. Luke, who does not appear to be part of the cast for the upcoming game, made it clear that he finds these comparisons completely unfounded, stating that those who see no difference are not looking at the footage realistically.

During his discussion, Luke pointed directly to an image of the new protagonist Jason on his screen to emphasize how much visual fidelity has improved over the last decade. He joked about his own character's appearance in the previous game, noting that his digital counterpart never looked nearly as detailed or high-quality as the characters shown in the new footage. According to Luke, the visual leap is incredibly obvious, and he flatly rejected the idea that the two games look alike.

One of the most significant advancements Luke highlighted in the new footage is the realism of character movement. He explained that in Grand Theft Auto 5, character animations still retained a slightly rigid, mechanical quality, noting that his own character's legs always seemed to have an unnatural bend when standing or walking. In contrast, he praised the motion technology in Grand Theft Auto 6, pointing out that the characters now walk and stand with natural, authentic human posture and gait.

Luke compared the current technological jump to the transition between Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5, recalling how the graphics of his 2013 game completely outclassed its predecessor. He urged skeptics to look closely at the finer details showcased in the extended preview, specifically citing the highly detailed models for helicopters and airplanes, as well as the advanced visual effects used for vehicle explosions.

The actor also addressed comparisons made by some fans who claimed Grand Theft Auto 6 does not look any better than Rockstar's 2018 western epic, Red Dead Redemption 2. Luke directly disputed this sentiment, asserting that the graphics in the upcoming title comfortably surpass those of the highly praised western game. He insisted that the visual upgrades are undeniable once viewers pay attention to the sheer level of detail on display.

This is not the first time Luke has publicly defended Rockstar's creative choices for the upcoming sequel. In 2024, he spoke out against online critics who complained about the introduction of Lucia, the franchise's first female protagonist in a major modern release. At the time, Luke dismissed accusations that the developer was simply bowing to external social pressures, praising Lucia's design and pointing out that female protagonists have existed in the series' past, even if not on a scale this massive.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While the recent extended look has given the gaming community plenty of new details to analyze, including revamped wanted systems, new side activities, and fresh story missions, Rockstar Games is expected to share even more information as the official release date approaches.
