AMC Theaters Launches Its Own Film Distribution Company As Small Budget Movies Soar

AMC Theaters has launched Leawood Films, a new movie distribution label designed to bring fully financed and completed independent and mid-sized films to the big screen. The initiative aims to capitalize on the growing audience demand for smaller-budget theatrical releases.

In a major shift for the theatrical exhibition landscape, AMC Theaters has officially entered the movie distribution business. On August 31, 2026, the cinema giant announced the creation of Leawood Films, its own dedicated distribution label. This new venture is specifically designed to acquire and release fully financed, completed independent and mid-sized motion pictures that might otherwise struggle to secure traditional theatrical distribution.

The decision to launch Leawood Films comes at a time when smaller-budget productions are experiencing a significant surge in popularity and commercial viability. Recent low-budget hits like Obsession and Backrooms have demonstrated that massive financial backing is no longer a prerequisite for box office success. Additionally, the highly anticipated independent horror film Iron Lung, created by YouTube personality Markiplier, garnered enough momentum to secure wide theatrical backing from AMC and other major cinema chains, highlighting a shifting tide in consumer preferences.

According to Adam Aron, the chairman and chief CEO of AMC Entertainment, the initiative is a direct response to evolving moviegoer habits. Aron noted that audiences are consistently showing a strong appetite for a diverse range of theatrical content. He expressed confidence that Leawood Films will provide immense value to independent filmmakers by guaranteeing them screen availability, favorable financial terms, and access to AMC's robust marketing resources and industry connections.

The strategic move also aims to address the issue of excess capacity within the cinema industry. Aron explained that bringing even a few additional films to theaters each year would provide a welcome boost to AMC's locations in the United States, as well as its Odeon cinemas across Europe. By filling empty screens with unique independent content, the company hopes to maximize theater utilization and drive additional concession and ticket revenue.

To guide the new distribution label, AMC has assembled an advisory board consisting of seasoned industry executives. The board features Toby Emmerich, the former chairman of the Warner Bros Group; Ricky Strauss, who previously served as the marketing president for Walt Disney Studios; and Kyle Davies, a veteran distribution executive formerly with Paramount. This leadership team brings decades of studio experience to help navigate the competitive distribution landscape.

AMC's venture reflects a broader industry trend where major entertainment entities are adapting to new creator-driven models. Markiplier, for instance, recently pitched YouTube on the concept of distributing independent films directly through its platform. By establishing Leawood Films, AMC is positioning itself to capture these emerging creative projects early, offering what it describes as a low-risk opportunity to elevate the next breakout independent hit into the global spotlight.
