10 Essential GameCube Games Still Missing From Switch Online

More than a year after GameCube titles arrived on the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, the available software selection remains small. A new report highlights ten classic GameCube games that have yet to join the service, including major releases like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart: Double Dash, and Animal Crossing.

GameCube software has been accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack tier for well over a year, yet the overall library remains remarkably modest. The digital service originally launched with three titles—F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur 2, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker—and has added only eight games since its debut. Despite the original console hosting a deep catalog of critically acclaimed titles, numerous standout games remain unavailable on the platform.

Among the most notable omissions is the original Animal Crossing, which introduced Western audiences to the life-simulation franchise prior to the success of Nintendo Switch's Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Fighting game enthusiasts also face a missing cornerstone in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The 2001 release remains a staple at competitive fighting game tournaments due to its fast mechanics, precise execution, and high skill ceiling, making it a highly anticipated candidate for a modern digital re-release.

Nintendo's iconic mascot lineup is further underrepresented by the absence of Mario Kart: Double Dash. The 2003 racing title introduced a unique dual-racer mechanic where two characters shared a single kart, a feature that set it apart from both previous and subsequent entries in the series. Similarly, the original Metroid Prime remains absent from the service; while Nintendo released a standalone remastered version for the Switch, the unaltered 2002 original build has not been preserved on the Switch Online platform.

The list of missing essentials extends to third-party releases and major role-playing games. Monolith Soft and Namco's card-based RPG Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, along with Sega's high-seas adventure Skies of Arcadia Legends, are both missing despite their strong reputations. Additionally, Capcom and Arika's side-scrolling spin-off Mega Man Network Transmission has been excluded from recent modern compilations, leaving Switch Online as a potential avenue for its revival.

Obscure and cult-favorite titles also make up a notable portion of the requested catalog. The psychological horror game Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem gained fame for its fourth-wall-breaking sanity effects that simulated television glitches and hardware errors. Meanwhile, the action-strategy game Cubivore: Survival of the Fittest saw a very limited Western distribution by Atlus after Nintendo opted not to publish it outside Japan, causing secondary market prices for physical copies to surge in subsequent years.

Early system-defining games round out the requested software, such as Amusement Vision's Super Monkey Ball. Serving as a launch title in North America, the skill-based platformer established the franchise through its challenging single-player stages and local four-player mini-games. As subscribers await future catalog updates, adding these prominent releases could significantly enhance the value of Nintendo's subscription service.
