Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gets A Surprise Switch 2 Update, Bringing Eight-Player Split-Screen To The Evergreen Racing Game

Nintendo has released a surprise free update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch 2, introducing an eight-player local split-screen mode. The patch also brings visual enhancements, faster loading times, and several gameplay adjustments to the long-running racing game, alongside updates for other first-party titles.

Nintendo has unexpectedly released a major update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, specifically tailored to leverage the capabilities of its Switch 2 hardware. The patch, which is available to players at no additional cost, introduces a highly anticipated local multiplayer feature that significantly expands the game's couch-co-op capabilities. This update marks a notable moment for the enduring racing title, which continues to receive support and enhancements years after its initial debut.

The most prominent addition in this update is the introduction of an eight-player split-screen mode on a single console. Previously, local multiplayer on a single system was capped at four participants. With this new patch, up to eight racers can now compete simultaneously on the same screen, provided they are playing on a Switch 2 console. To facilitate this expanded multiplayer setup, players must connect at least one Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller to the system.

In addition to the expanded player count, the Switch 2 update enhances the overall technical performance of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Players running the game on the newer hardware will experience improved image quality and reduced loading times. The update also integrates support for GameShare and CameraPlay features, which allow players to view live reactions of their opponents during matches, though this camera functionality is restricted to sessions featuring between two and four players.

Beyond the technical and multiplayer overhauls, Nintendo has implemented several minor gameplay adjustments and quality-of-life changes. For players who own the Booster Course Pass, a new "96 Races" option has been added for custom VS matches, allowing for massive, uninterrupted tournaments. Additionally, a balance change ensures that players are no longer slowed down when the Boo item is activated to steal an opponent's item, streamlining the flow of items during chaotic races.

Another subtle but universal gameplay tweak introduced in the patch notes is a slight increase in overall racing speed. According to Nintendo's documentation, all racers will now move marginally faster, with the speed boost described as being the equivalent of holding one extra coin. This adjustment slightly alters the pacing of the game across all tracks and modes, providing a fresh feel for veteran players.

This update is part of a broader wave of recent activity from Nintendo, which has been actively updating its catalog for the Switch 2. Just days prior, Pikmin 3 Deluxe received a similar free update that brought graphical enhancements to the strategy game. Additionally, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received a minor patch to improve its online matchmaking and battle stability, though that particular fighting game has not yet received a dedicated Switch 2 upgrade.
