Gears Of War: E-Day Campaign – Brotherhood And Hope In A Hopeless World | Official XBOX Podcast

In an interview on the Official Xbox Podcast, The Coalition's Matt Searcy and Raul Figueroa shared details on Gears of War: E-Day. The upcoming campaign, set in the city of Kalona, focuses on the initial days of the Locust invasion, emphasizing themes of brotherhood, horror, and tactical gameplay.

During a special gamescom episode of the Official Xbox Podcast in Cologne, Germany, host Jeff Rubenstein sat down with representatives from developer The Coalition to discuss the upcoming campaign for Gears of War: E-Day. Creative Director Matt Searcy and Campaign Design Director Raul Figueroa shared insights into the game's narrative direction, environmental design, and updated gameplay mechanics, following the debut of a brutal new story trailer at Opening Night Live.

The developers highlighted a major new antagonist introduced in the trailer: Vraahk, a ruthless blight commander who was previously injured during the Lambent War. According to Figueroa, Vraahk's sole objective is the complete eradication of humanity, a motivation that drives the extreme brutality depicted in the game. Searcy added that Vraahk's elite troops, known as the Scorched Legion, mirror this savage nature through self-mutilation and spiked armor, ensuring that players feel the commander's threatening presence even when he is not directly on screen.

While the broader Gears of War lore establishes that the Locust invasion ultimately decimates two-thirds of the population on the planet Sera, E-Day narrows its focus to a highly intimate struggle. The entire campaign takes place within the single city of Kalona over the first two days of the onslaught. By centering the story on Bravo Squad and other local survivors, the developers aim to explore how ordinary soldiers and citizens attempt to secure small victories and maintain hope in the face of an overwhelming, unfamiliar threat.

The setting of Kalona was designed from the ground up to function as a central character in the narrative. Figueroa explained that players will experience the city before, during, and after the initial attack, allowing them to witness its destruction firsthand. This approach is intended to make the loss feel more poignant compared to previous franchise entries where the world was already ruined. As players navigate the crumbling urban landscape, they will encounter unique landmarks that visibly deteriorate as the campaign progresses.

Though the campaign follows a linear progression overall, the level design grants players greater agency by opening up multi-block areas of the city to explore. Players can choose to pursue optional side objectives, such as rescuing trapped families or assisting stranded military squads, which offer narrative rewards. Additionally, the game introduces a weapon modification system to the campaign for the first time, alongside hidden hard cases that provide gameplay progression, rewarding players who take the time to investigate their surroundings.

To match the increased mobility of the players—who now have expanded climbing abilities and a dedicated jump button—The Coalition has significantly upgraded the intelligence of the Locust enemies. Figueroa noted that enemies can now outflank players by climbing vehicles and structures, while specific units like grenadiers will strategically deploy smoke grenades to obscure their movement before launching close-range shotgun attacks. This enhanced AI is designed to make combat encounters feel like dynamic tactical puzzles, especially on higher difficulty settings.
