Phoenix Cyclops Joins MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls On November 2

Arc System Works has announced that Phoenix Cyclops will join the MARVEL TŃkon: Fighting Souls roster on November 2 as the game's first Year 1 DLC character. Voiced by Ray Chase, this version of Scott Summers utilizes both Optic Blasts and the Phoenix Force. Alongside his release, players can purchase classic DLC costumes, access a new PlayStation Plus Game Trial, and purchase the game at a discount.

Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka has officially revealed the gameplay trailer for Phoenix Cyclops, the initial downloadable content character arriving for MARVEL TŃkon: Fighting Souls. Scheduled to launch on November 2 as part of the game's Year 1 Pass, this incarnation of Scott Summers is voiced by Ray Chase. The character's combat style merges his traditional Optic Blast projectile attacks with the destructive capabilities of the Phoenix Force. To accompany his debut, the developer is also releasing "Classic" and "Legacy" DLC outfits on the same day, allowing players to customize his appearance.

To celebrate the upcoming character launch, the publisher has initiated the game's first-ever discount promotion on the PlayStation Store, offering the Ultimate Edition at a reduced price starting today. Additionally, PlayStation Plus members can now access a three-hour Game Trial to experience the fighting game before committing to a purchase. These promotions are designed to welcome new players into the community just as the post-launch roster begins to expand.

According to Yamanaka, the development team initially considered Cyclops as a prime candidate for the base roster representing the Unbreakable X-Men team. However, because the character has a long history in Marvel fighting games with a highly established visual and mechanical identity, the creators wanted to challenge themselves. The narrative team suggested utilizing the Phoenix-corrupted version of Scott Summers to deliver a fresh aesthetic and an unexpected playstyle, leading to the decision to delay his release until they could offer a truly unique iteration.

In terms of character design, this version of Scott Summers is driven by a belief in absolute justice, willing to make severe choices to prevent mutant extinction. The developers aimed to capture his internal conflict and emotional burden by giving him a younger physical appearance, which contrasts with the intense, fiery aura of the Phoenix Force. The visual design transitions from an idealistic leader to a corrupted figure, incorporating numerous details directly inspired by the Marvel comic books.

Mechanically, Phoenix Cyclops operates as an all-rounder who is effective at both close-range skirmishes and long-range zoning. He possesses a diverse toolkit that includes command throws, rushing strikes, setup tools, and multiple variations of his signature Optic Blasts. By consistently utilizing his optic attacks, players accumulate a unique resource known as Solar Shards. Once four shards are gathered, Cyclops can transform into his Dark Phoenix state, a mechanic inspired by the Avengers vs. X-Men comic book storyline.

While the Dark Phoenix transformation provides a massive temporary boost to his offensive capabilities, it introduces a high-risk element by gradually depleting Cyclops' own health. Yamanaka emphasized that managing this double-edged power will be crucial for players seeking victory. For fans who prefer the traditional look of the X-Men leader, the inclusion of the "Classic" and "Legacy" costumes ensures that players can enjoy the new gameplay mechanics while retaining the iconic aesthetic they grew up with.

Before his official release in November, fighting game enthusiasts will have an early opportunity to test the character. Attendees of the upcoming EVO France event, taking place from October 9 to October 11, can visit the MARVEL TŃkon: Fighting Souls booth to play as Phoenix Cyclops. Yamanaka expressed gratitude to the community for their support since the game's launch two months ago and promised more updates in the future.
