Star Wars Zero Company Was Originally Pitched As A Titanfall Universe Game

A recent report reveals that the newly released tactics game Star Wars Zero Company was originally conceived as a project set within the Titanfall and Apex Legends universe. The game's developer, Bit Reactor, pivoted to the Star Wars intellectual property after a pitch to Respawn Entertainment's Vince Zampella was rejected in favor of utilizing the massive sci-fi franchise.

The newly released tactical game Star Wars Zero Company has emerged as one of the most unexpected success stories of 2026, earning critical acclaim and drawing a massive audience. However, a recent investigative report has revealed that the game's origins were entirely disconnected from the galaxy far, far away. According to legal documents uncovered by journalist Stephen Totilo of Game File, the project was initially envisioned as a tactical experience set within the universe of Titanfall and Apex Legends.

The revelation surfaced through legal paperwork associated with an ongoing lawsuit involving the leadership at developer Bit Reactor. The documents outline how game director Greg Foertsch collaborated with studio co-founder Alison Kelly to draft initial concepts for a new tactical video game. These early efforts eventually secured them a high-profile meeting with Vince Zampella, the co-founder of Respawn Entertainment and a prominent executive in the gaming industry.

During their discussions, the late executive prompted Foertsch to design a pitch centered around Respawn's proprietary intellectual property. This directive led the development team to formulate a tactical game concept set within the shared universe of Titanfall and Apex Legends. While the exact mechanics of this proposed game remain vague, the pitch was directly tied to the Apex Legends brand. It remains uncertain whether the concept would have featured the franchise's iconic giant mechs or if it would have focused on a roster of hero characters, akin to the upcoming Rainbow Six Tactics.

Despite the effort put into the Titanfall-themed pitch, Zampella ultimately turned it down. Instead of dismissing the team entirely, he encouraged Bit Reactor to revise their approach and develop a new pitch utilizing the Star Wars license. Respawn Entertainment has long maintained a significant stewardship over Star Wars video games, having developed the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi series and previously worked on a first-person shooter project in the same universe. Directing the tactical project toward Star Wars was a natural extension of this relationship.

This strategic pivot proved to be the catalyst for the creation of Star Wars Zero Company. The transition from a niche shooter spin-off to a major licensed Star Wars title redefined the project's trajectory, ultimately leading to its highly successful launch. The game has resonated deeply with players, securing a peak concurrent player count of 77,889 on the Steam platform over a recent weekend, bolstered by exceptionally strong word-of-mouth recommendations across various social media networks.

Despite the game's current commercial and critical triumph, the journey to release was fraught with severe financial instability for the developers. The same Game File report disclosed that the vast majority of Bit Reactor's staff was placed on furlough just weeks before the game's official launch due to the studio running out of funding. With the game now performing exceptionally well in the market, there is widespread industry hope that the studio will secure the necessary capital to reinstate the affected employees.
