Forza Horizon 6 Appears To Have Been Quietly Delayed On PS5

Reports suggest that the PlayStation 5 version of Forza Horizon 6 has been pushed back to 2027. While Microsoft originally scheduled the open-world racer for a 2026 release on Sony's console, recent industry reports indicate a shift in plans. This potential delay follows a period of strategic adjustments and leadership changes at Xbox, though a complete cancellation of the port remains highly unlikely.

Speculation is mounting that the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 port of Forza Horizon 6 has been pushed back. Microsoft has remained notably silent regarding the Sony console version of its popular open-world racing game for several months, leading to questions about its scheduled launch. While the title was originally expected to arrive on the PlayStation 5 sometime during 2026, recent industry reports indicate that players may have to wait much longer than initially anticipated.

The first major indication of a schedule change came from Tom Warren of The Verge, who stated on the social media platform X that he does not anticipate the PlayStation 5 version of Forza Horizon 6 to debut in 2026. This comment was made in response to an inquiry about a potential quiet delay for the game. Following Warren's post, media outlet IGN published its own coverage of the situation, noting that its own sources confirm this expectation of a delay to be accurate.

Although Microsoft has not officially confirmed a change in the release window, the lack of communication from official channels supports these reports. The last time the official Forza Horizon communication channels acknowledged the PlayStation 5 version was in January, when the company reconfirmed that the driving game would land on Sony's platform before the end of the year. Since that update, promotional efforts and status reports regarding the port have ceased entirely.

This silence coincides with a turbulent period of transition within Xbox's executive leadership. In February, Asha Sharma took over as the new chief executive officer of the gaming division. Since her appointment, Xbox has experienced significant internal debate regarding its multi-platform publishing strategy. Sharma has repeatedly adjusted her stance on which intellectual properties will remain exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem and which ones will be allowed to transition to competing hardware platforms.

Under this new leadership, Xbox appears to be placing a renewed emphasis on its own console hardware by securing high-profile exclusives. For instance, during the month of June, the company declared that Gears of War: E-Day would be exclusive to Xbox consoles. This announcement directly contradicted earlier reports and leaked marketing materials that had suggested a PlayStation 5 version of the shooter was in active development. Additionally, Microsoft confirmed that the upcoming title Clockwork Revolution will not be ported to Sony's system.

Despite these strategic shifts and the cancellation of rumored ports, Microsoft has generally honored its previously finalized public commitments. The company successfully delivered Halo: Campaign Evolved to PlayStation 5 owners as promised. Furthermore, the upcoming Fable reboot, which was announced as a multi-platform release for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5, is still scheduled to launch simultaneously across all three platforms on February 23.

Because of this track record of fulfilling official announcements, industry analysts believe it is highly improbable that the PlayStation 5 version of Forza Horizon 6 has been canceled entirely. Instead, Microsoft may have chosen to delay the port to extend the game's period of console exclusivity on Xbox Series X and S. This strategy allows the company to bolster its own hardware sales while still retaining the option to tap into the lucrative PlayStation market at a later date.

Financially, Microsoft is under very little pressure to rush the PlayStation 5 port to market. Forza Horizon 6 has already achieved massive commercial success on its launch platforms. Furthermore, its predecessor proved to be an incredibly strong seller on Sony's hardware, surpassing 5 million copies sold on the PlayStation 5 alone. This established audience guarantees that a delayed port will still find a highly receptive and profitable market whenever Microsoft decides to finally release it.
