Final Fantasy Meets Zelda In Steam's Best New RPG

The classic 2008 mobile action-RPG Zenonia has officially arrived on Windows PC via Steam. Developed by Gamevil, the title blends visual elements reminiscent of classic Legend of Zelda games with a protagonist inspired by Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife, offering modern players a nostalgic 15-to-30-hour adventure featuring real-time combat, a dynamic alignment system, and survival mechanics.

Long before modern smartphones dominated the portable gaming landscape, major developers like Square Enix were already experimenting with mobile networks. In the early 2000s, Japanese flip phones hosted unique titles such as Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, utilizing built-in hardware like cameras to drive gameplay. While massive franchises like Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy eventually established highly successful mobile spin-offs, one native mobile RPG series from that era frequently escapes broader historical recognition despite its massive impact.

Originally developed and published by Gamevil, Zenonia debuted in South Korea in 2008. The title quickly expanded its reach, launching on the iOS App Store in the United States in 2009 and arriving on the Google Play Store in 2010. Its popularity even prompted ports to dedicated gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DSi and the PlayStation Portable. After eventually being delisted from various mobile storefronts, the classic title has officially returned, allowing players to experience its retro charm on Windows PC.

Visually, Zenonia draws heavy inspiration from classic 16-bit adventures, closely resembling an enhanced version of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The game's protagonist, a 17-year-old boy named Regret, sports spiky blonde hair and wields a massive greatsword, heavily mirroring early design concepts of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. Regret's journey follows a traditional role-playing narrative as he sets out to uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of his adoptive father.

The gameplay of Zenonia 1 centers on fast-paced, top-down real-time action. While the original mobile versions relied on virtual on-screen D-pads, the new PC port modernizes the experience by introducing native support for both keyboards and controllers. Despite these control updates, the core combat loop remains faithful to the original, focusing on standard attacks and a variety of equippable active skills.

Players can tailor their experience by choosing from three distinct character classes: Paladin, Warrior, or Assassin. Each class features its own dedicated skill tree, allowing for deep mechanical customization. This progression is further supported by hundreds of different weapons and pieces of equipment that players can collect and equip throughout their journey, ensuring that different playstyles are well accommodated.

Zenonia 1 distinguishes itself from contemporary mobile RPGs through its dynamic alignment system. Player decisions throughout the story, such as choosing to complete specific side quests for non-player characters, directly influence Regret's moral standing, shifting his alignment toward good or evil. Additionally, players must manage survival mechanics, keeping Regret fed to prevent hunger from draining his SP, and monitoring his inventory weight, as carrying too much armor actively reduces his movement speed.

Offering a substantial campaign that can take anywhere from 15 to 30 hours to fully complete, Zenonia 1 combines exploration, real-time combat, and witty dialogue. Its arrival on Steam marks the very first time the influential mobile RPG has been officially playable on the PC platform, giving a new generation of RPG fans the chance to experience a piece of mobile gaming history.
