2026 Pokémon World Championships: Everything Announced
The 2026 Pokemon World Championships concluded with a major wave of announcements from The Pokemon Company. Key reveals include a new animated movie slated for 2027, the location of the 2027 championships, and major updates for Pokemon Champions, Pokemon GO, the Trading Card Game, and Pokemon UNITE. Additionally, the inaugural PokemonXP fan convention hosted several product and media reveals.
During the closing ceremonies of the 2026 Pokemon World Championships, Tsunekazu Ishihara, the president and CEO of The Pokemon Company, unveiled a series of major updates for the franchise. The event, which took place alongside the first-ever PokemonXP fan convention, served as the launchpad for several highly anticipated projects. Among the biggest announcements was the reveal of a new animated film titled Pokemon Wild Card, scheduled for release in 2027. This project marks the first new animated Pokemon movie in seven years, and its initial teaser trailer showcased a Pokemon Trading Card Game player alongside the Pokemon Mimikyu.
The Pokemon Company also confirmed the location for the next global competitive gathering. The 2027 Pokemon World Championships will take place in Singapore, marking the tournament's return to Asia for the first time since the 2023 event in Yokohama, Japan. This announcement follows a weekend of intense competition, which included the final appearance of Pokemon UNITE on the main World Championships stage. Moving forward, the multiplayer online battle arena game will transition to its own dedicated tournament circuit, starting with the Pokemon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo, which is tentatively scheduled for late March 2027.
Significant updates are coming to various Pokemon video games, starting with Pokemon Champions. The game will introduce Regulation Set M-C on September 9th JST, bringing Rillaboom, Baxcalibur, and new Z-Mega Evolutions into the fold. Players can look forward to using Mega Absol Z, Mega Lucario Z, and Mega Garchomp Z, while a trailer also teased the potential arrival of Mega Heatran. Meanwhile, Pokemon GO is introducing immediate updates that grant eligible Mega-Evolved Pokemon an additional Charged Attack. Furthermore, starting with the Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale, players can bring Mega-Evolved Pokemon into all tiers of the GO Battle League, and Armored Mewtwo will make its return to the game after a six-year absence.
The Pokemon Trading Card Game is also preparing for major changes. A new teaser showcased the upcoming "ex-Star" series logo, alongside the debut of Mega Lucario Z. The preview highlighted new "Mega attack rare cards" featuring fan-favorite pocket monsters such as Mega Darkrai, Mega Greninja, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Zygarde. Additionally, the Legendary Beasts from the Johto region—Suicune, Raikou, and Entei—were teased for future card releases. For digital players, the Pokemon TCG Pocket panel at PokemonXP revealed that dual-type cards will begin rolling out starting in October 2026.
Pokemon UNITE players have a busy autumn ahead with the arrival of several new playable characters. The game will finally round out its Eevee roster, making all eight evolutions playable alongside Eevee itself. Morpeko, classified as a Speedster, is scheduled to arrive on September 4, followed by the Attacker Toxtricity in its Amped Form on September 24. In October, the Speedster Jolteon and the All-Rounder Flareon will join the playable roster. These character additions come on the heels of Zeta Division securing the final Pokemon UNITE world championship title under the traditional World Championships format.
The concurrent PokemonXP convention hosted several media and merchandise reveals of its own. Attendees were treated to the first trailer for Pokemon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu, an upcoming animated series that will stream exclusively on Disney+ and DisneyXD. On the hardware side, the Fitbit Air Special Edition Pokemon Sleep was officially unveiled. During a panel, Tsunekazu Ishihara discussed the company's future directions, noting that integrating the Pokemon brand with wearable technology represents a key challenge and opportunity for the franchise moving forward.
