PAX Unplugged Houston To Debut In June 2027: "It's A Chance To Bring PAX Back To The PAX South Fans That Missed Us"
ReedPop and Penny Arcade have announced PAX Unplugged Houston, a new tabletop-focused convention scheduled to debut in Texas in June 2027. The event marks a return to the region following the cancellation of PAX South.
Organizers ReedPop and Penny Arcade have officially announced a new addition to their convention lineup with the debut of PAX Unplugged Houston. Scheduled to take place from June 25 to June 27, 2027, the inaugural event will be hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. This upcoming convention represents a strategic expansion of the tabletop-focused "Unplugged" brand, which first established its roots in Pennsylvania back in 2017.
The decision to bring a new convention to Texas is deeply connected to the history of the brand in the region. PAX South, which was previously held in San Antonio, was officially cancelled for the foreseeable future in 2021, with its final physical iteration taking place in January 2020. According to PAX event manager Sean Gonzalez, the new Houston event serves as an opportunity to reconnect with the dedicated southern fanbase that has missed having a local PAX event since the southern branch was discontinued.
In selecting Houston as the destination for this new venture, organizers evaluated several major metropolitan areas. The decision-making process involved analyzing infrastructure capabilities and assessing demand from exhibitor partners who were eager to see a tabletop-focused PAX event established in the region. Gonzalez noted that while they were naturally inclined to return to the southern United States, Houston ultimately emerged as the premier location to launch this second iteration of the Unplugged series.
Attendees of the June 2027 event can expect a diverse lineup of activities tailored specifically to analogue gaming. The convention will feature a dedicated expo floor showcasing various tabletop exhibitors, alongside scheduled panels, competitive tournaments, and community meetups. This structure mirrors the successful formula of the original Pennsylvania event, catering directly to the growing popularity of board games, card games, and role-playing games within the broader gaming community.
Despite the introduction of this new Texas event, organizers are maintaining a measured approach to further expansion. Gonzalez emphasized that the primary objective for the team is to guarantee the highest quality experience for exhibitors and attendees at their existing shows. The organization intends to dedicate its full attention to successfully launching the Houston event before contemplating any additional expansions to the PAX brand portfolio.
While preparing for the Houston debut, the organizers are also actively enhancing their established events, PAX East and PAX West. These ongoing conventions are receiving new programming tracks, stages, and specialized feature areas to keep the experiences fresh. Gonzalez expressed gratitude for the enduring passion of the gaming community and the support of industry partners, noting that their dedication remains strong even during times when the wider gaming industry faces economic and operational challenges.
For those interested in attending or covering the inaugural Texas event, the organizers have announced that ticket sales will begin later this year. Additionally, application windows for members of the media and digital content creators are scheduled to open during the same timeframe, ahead of the June 2027 launch.
