Warner Bros. 41-Year-Old Fantasy Classic Reboot Is Officially Happening

Director Adam Wingard has confirmed that his long-gestating cinematic adaptation of the iconic 1980s cartoon ThunderCats remains active. Developed in partnership with Warner Bros., the project recently received a fresh script revision. While other features have temporarily delayed its progress, the filmmaker maintains that the ambitious hybrid film is still moving forward.

Director Adam Wingard has provided an update on his planned film adaptation of the classic 1980s animated series ThunderCats, clarifying that the feature remains active within his production lineup. The filmmaker, known for helming major studio entries such as Godzilla vs. Kong, confirmed that the project has not been canceled despite an extended period without major public developments. Although his direct focus has recently shifted toward other commitments, he noted that creative progress on the revival continues behind the scenes.

First formally announced in 2021 as a collaboration with Warner Bros., the ThunderCats feature was envisioned as a grand cinematic expansion of the original television property. Wingard reteamed with his frequent writing partner Simon Barrett to craft the screenplay. The endeavor represents a deeply personal initiative for Wingard, who has previously recounted spending his high school years writing an extensive fan script for the franchise long before pursuing a professional directorial career.

Early artistic plans for the feature outlined a desire to avoid a traditional fully live-action approach, with Wingard seeking to circumvent the visual style seen in modern musical adaptations like Cats. Instead, the director proposed a hybrid visual style blending computer-generated imagery with a hyper-realistic aesthetic. This design philosophy aims to honor the distinct retro visual identity of the original decade's designs rather than completely redesigning the core characters.

Progress on the film has moved slowly as Wingard navigated a busy production schedule, including directing Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the action thriller Onslaught. According to the filmmaker, a new draft of the script was completed earlier this year before immediate attention shifted to pushing Onslaught into distribution. Although the property is currently not his primary focus, the creative team intends to re-engage with the script as scheduling allows.

The ongoing commitment to ThunderCats comes alongside changes to Wingard's broader creative slate, which recently saw him step away from a planned sequel to the action feature Face/Off. Meanwhile, the broader franchise appears to be receiving renewed interest from its parent studio. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation revealed that a separate animated ThunderCats feature is also under early development, though specific personnel and release windows for that project remain unannounced.

The dual developments mark a potential resurgence for the property, which last saw a television release with the broadcast of ThunderCats Roar on Cartoon Network in 2020. However, industry observers note that the climate for big-budget adaptations of nostalgic 1980s properties faces heightened scrutiny, particularly following commercial hurdles encountered by similar high-profile projects like Amazon MGM Studios' Masters of the Universe. Whether these external market factors or the parallel animation project will influence Wingard's timeline remains to be seen.
