“Trust Us–We’re Remedy:” Control Resonant Will Have Plenty Of Lore, The Devs Just Can’t Reveal Any Of It
Remedy Entertainment has assured fans that Control Resonant will feature a deep narrative and rich lore, despite promotional trailers focusing heavily on combat. Senior communications manager Miika Huttunen explained that the story is being kept under wraps until launch, promising plenty of twists, environmental storytelling, and dialogue choices that shape the protagonist's journey.
Fans of the Control franchise who were worried that the upcoming Control Resonant might prioritize action over narrative depth can rest easy. Developer Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that the game will be packed with the rich lore and complex storytelling the studio is known for, despite the combat-heavy nature of the promotional footage released so far. The lack of narrative focus in trailers is not a reflection of the game's actual content, but rather a deliberate strategy to keep the story tightly under wraps until players can experience it themselves.
According to Remedy's senior communications manager, Miika Huttunen, the promotional materials have leaned heavily on combat because gameplay mechanics do not need to be hidden or revealed gradually to protect the plot. Huttunen emphasized that there are plenty of surprises, twists, and bizarre elements waiting to be discovered in the final release. He urged fans to trust the studio's track record, expressing hope that Remedy's reputation for narrative-driven experiences earns them the benefit of the doubt during the pre-release period.
The narrative of Control Resonant will be delivered through a variety of classic storytelling methods, including interactions with non-playable characters, environmental clues, and scattered collectibles. Players can expect to find numerous Federal Bureau of Control documents and written materials dating back to the era before the Hiss invasion. Exploration will be highly rewarded, as the game's world is meticulously detailed, ensuring that the lore is deeply integrated into the environment rather than treated as an afterthought.
Huttunen also shared details on how player agency will influence the experience. While the main storyline remains largely linear and leads to a single, distinct ending, players' dialogue choices will have subtle consequences. These decisions will influence how other characters react, alter side quest variations, and gradually shape the protagonist's personality. True to Remedy's style, the singular ending is expected to be highly unpredictable.
A brief gameplay demonstration at Gamescom gave fans a glimpse of the game's setting and protagonist, Dylan. The test-subject-turned-paranatural-hero is shown navigating a heavily altered, unrecognizable Manhattan, where gravity shifts force players to traverse streets pointing straight into the sky or curving overhead. Dylan is depicted actively seeking out and consuming the stupefying Mold, raising immediate questions about how the world fell into such a state. Unraveling the mystery of Dylan's personal journey is designed to be a gradual puzzle for players to solve.
The combat showcased in the demo is fast-paced and fluid, emphasizing aggressive tactics. Utilizing a shapeshifting melee weapon known as the Aberrant, Dylan can build up a Falter gauge to execute lethal strikes against various grotesque enemies, including shambling Mold creatures. Because Dylan can only recover health by defeating foes, and the game lacks a parry mechanic, players must adopt an offensive strategy where their weapon feels like a natural extension of their abilities.
To break up the intense combat, players can retreat to a liminal space known as The Gap. This safe haven allows players to practice combat maneuvers against different enemy types in a low-stakes environment, adjust their loadouts, equip stat-boosting Artifacts, and upgrade Dylan's abilities. However, returning to the main world comes with a catch: enemies are refreshed and strengthened to match the player's current level, maintaining a consistent challenge throughout the journey.
