Mario Kart 8 Just Got A Game-Changing Update For Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has released a major update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, introducing exclusive features for the Nintendo Switch 2. The update includes an eight-player split-screen mode, enhanced visual clarity, faster loading times, and a massive 96-race endurance challenge for Booster Course Pass owners.

Nintendo has surprised the gaming community by launching a massive new update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, specifically tailored to leverage the capabilities of the newly introduced Nintendo Switch 2. This unexpected patch, designated as Version 4.0.0, brings a host of technical enhancements and gameplay features to the highly popular 2017 kart racer, which currently boasts a massive player base of over 71 million users globally.

The most notable addition in this update is the introduction of an eight-player split-screen multiplayer mode, which effectively doubles the local multiplayer capacity of the original Nintendo Switch version. To facilitate this chaotic local setup, the Nintendo Switch 2 system allows players to connect up to seven original Nintendo Switch controllers, such as Joy-Cons or Switch Pro Controllers. However, to achieve the full eight-player configuration, at least one of the newer Joy-Con 2 controllers or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller must be connected to the system.

In addition to the expanded local multiplayer, the update introduces a brand-new feature called CameraPlay. This mode utilizes an external USB camera, which is sold separately, to display players' faces on-screen during races. CameraPlay is supported in local multiplayer modes for two to four players, as well as in online play. For online matches, players must participate in a GameChat session to use the camera, ensuring that video footage and microphone audio are securely transmitted only to fellow GameChat members.

Technical improvements are also a major focus of the Version 4.0.0 patch. When played on the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now features significantly clearer visuals optimized for both the console's built-in display and high-resolution television screens. Furthermore, players will experience much faster loading times before the start of races and battle modes, streamlining the overall gameplay experience.

Beyond hardware-specific upgrades, Nintendo has implemented general gameplay adjustments that affect all players. Notably, the base speed of racers has been slightly increased by an increment equivalent to collecting one coin, a change that will likely prompt competitive players to re-evaluate their established time trial strategies. Additionally, a balance change ensures that players using the Boo item to turn invisible will no longer experience a reduction in speed when driving over off-road terrain.

Finally, the update delivers a massive piece of content for owners of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass. A new "96 Races" option has been added to the "VS Race" rule settings, allowing players to embark on an ultimate endurance challenge that spans every single track in the game, combining the original courses with all 48 tracks released across the game's six-part downloadable content campaign.
