MTG Officially Reveals 4 Epic New Marvel Commander Decks Coming In 2027
Wizards of the Coast revealed four upcoming Marvel Commander decks for Magic: The Gathering during New York Comic Con. Scheduled for an April 2027 release alongside the Darkhold Destiny set, the preconstructed decks feature Esper, Naya, Orzhov, and Rakdos color combinations themed around mystical and legendary characters like Doctor Strange, Thor, Blade, and Hela.
At New York Comic Con, Wizards of the Coast unveiled a fresh slate of preconstructed Commander decks for Magic: The Gathering as part of its upcoming Marvel crossover expansion, Darkhold Destiny. Scheduled to arrive in April 2027, this crossover initiative aims to address ongoing player critiques regarding Universes Beyond sets feeling disconnected from Magic's core fantasy identity. To bridge this gap, Darkhold Destiny introduces a dimension-spanning storyline centered around a cursed tome and various supervillains who attempt to command its power. Alongside the preconstructed decks, the crossover release will feature tie-in comics authored by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, special booster fun treatments, and novel scene boxes.
Among the newly detailed products is the Strange Academy precon, which draws inspiration from the 2020 Marvel comic book run created by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos. That comic storyline details Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo establishing a Louisiana-based academy designed to train budding spellcasters. While Doctor Strange was previously represented in Magic solely in his capacity as a medical practitioner, this Esper deck places him in the commander slot as a fully realized mystic. Mechanically, the white-blue-black deck centers around blinking allied creatures, targeting friendly units with spells, and recycling instants or sorceries for maximum utility.
For players looking for a more aggressive, combat-focused strategy, the Gods of Asgard deck offers a Naya color identity. Led by Thor, this red-green-white deck focuses heavily on maximizing the power stat of its commander and supporting combatants. The deck's list incorporates a variety of mythical deities and legendary warriors, encouraging players to engage in direct combat during every turn cycle. Designed to offer straightforward gameplay mechanics, the deck aims to appeal to players who favor impactful, high-power board presence during multiplayer matches.
The Midnight Sons deck shifts the focus toward Marvel's antiheroes and supernatural defenders, featuring characters such as Blade, Moon Knight, and Ghost Rider. Positioned in the Orzhov color pair, this white-black deck pits these heroes directly against the vampire factions of the Marvel universe. Tactical gameplay revolves around manipulating life totals through both gaining and losing life points. Opponents face drain effects from the vampire forces, while Blade himself gains increased power in proportion to the amount of life the pilot accumulates throughout the game.
Rounding out the four preconstructed options is the Lords of Hel deck, tailor-made for players who prefer a villainous, archenemy role at the table. Operating under the Rakdos color pair, this black-red deck brings together notable Marvel entities including Hela, Dormammu, demon lords, devils, avatars, and horrors. Players utilizing this strategy can field armies composed of zombies and Mindless Ones to strike at opponents across the board.
Beyond swarming the battlefield with tokens and minions, the Lords of Hel deck incorporates sacrifice mechanics that allow players to sell off their own creatures. Sacrificing these forces grants the pilot bonus card draw and triggers ping damage against opponents. Together, these four specialized decks represent a deliberate effort by Wizards of the Coast to integrate iconic comic book lore seamlessly into traditional Magic mechanics.
