You Have Minutes To Live: Introducing Echo Weaver
The Moonlight Kids and Akupara Games have released Echo Weaver, a knowledge-based "Metroidbrainia" time-loop puzzle game, on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass. Developed by a three-person team, the game challenges players to escape a collapsing space colony by mastering a repeating cycle where information is the only true upgrade.
Akupara Games and indie developer Moonlight Kids have officially launched Echo Weaver, a unique "Metroidbrainia" puzzle game, on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass. The project first caught the attention of Akupara Games' Head of Publishing, Buddy Sol!a, two years ago through an impressive early demo. Developed by a remote three-person team, the title blends elements of exploration and platforming, drawing comparisons to games like Outer Wilds, Celeste, and Ori and the Blind Forest.
Set in the ruined space colony of Provenance following a catastrophic event known as the Collapse, Echo Weaver traps players in a strict time loop. With only minutes to live during each cycle, players must navigate a clockwork world that resets continuously. Unlike traditional roguelikes, the game features no randomized or procedurally generated elements. Instead, it functions as a giant, interconnected puzzle where progress is entirely dependent on the information and secrets players carry over from previous runs.
The developers describe the game as being entirely knowledge-gated. Because there are no physical upgrades or gear to collect, players technically possess all the abilities required to finish the game from the very beginning. The team noted that if a player already knew all of the solutions, they could theoretically complete the entire game in about five minutes. This design philosophy shifts the focus away from grinding for new equipment and places it entirely on uncovering hidden layers of secrets and mastering the environment.
Creating a game centered around a knowledge-based time loop proved to be an immense technical challenge for the small studio. The developers admitted that the project required roughly five times the effort of a standard game. Although they initially believed a time-loop structure would simplify development by eliminating the need for traditional save systems, the seamless world design forced them to constantly track and save the state of every object in the game as areas loaded and unloaded without loading screens.
The narrative and tone of Echo Weaver also underwent significant changes during its development. The project was originally envisioned as a much darker, mature-rated game featuring brutal finishers. However, the developers eventually scaled back the violence, realizing that the extreme tone clashed with the game's artistic style. Despite this shift, the final game retains a mysterious atmosphere, charting a thematic journey that transitions from feelings of isolation and confusion to eventual mastery.
Players exploring the colony of Provenance will encounter a variety of characters trapped in the loop alongside them, including a pizza-serving cat, a cranky leader protecting refugees, and a doom-preaching cleric. To aid in their escape, players wield an alien glaive that grants reality-bending powers, allowing them to bypass obstacles and discover shortcuts. Echo Weaver is available now for $19.99, with availability on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
