Bandai Namco has unveiled Ace Combat Online, a companion suite of live-service multiplayer modes launching alongside Ace Combat 8. The online component features cooperative PvE missions, competitive PvPvE battles, and a dedicated social airforce base where players can interact, play classic arcade games, and listen to franchise soundtracks. Progression is tied to a seasonal battle pass system called the Ace Pass.
Bandai Namco has announced Ace Combat Online, a dedicated suite of live-service multiplayer modes that will accompany the upcoming release of Ace Combat 8. Revealed through a trailer on the franchise's official social media accounts, this companion experience introduces a variety of cooperative, competitive, and social features designed to keep the player base engaged over the long term. The online component is structured to offer diverse gameplay styles, ranging from structured team-based challenges to casual community spaces.
Among the cooperative options is Co-Op Assault, a PvE mode where two teams of four players compete indirectly to secure the highest score. Participants earn points by working with their squad to eliminate computer-controlled adversaries and complete specific objectives. For those seeking direct confrontation, the game features Co-Op Warfare, a PvPvE mode that places two four-player teams on the same battlefield. In this mode, teams are supported by their own computer-controlled ground, air, and sea forces. As players defeat enemies, their threat level rises, which increases both their point-multiplier potential and the bounty reward that the opposing team receives for shooting them down.
Ace Combat Online also introduces limited-time events known as Emergency missions, which feature two distinct formats. The first format, Scramble, tasks a four-player squad with defeating a computer-controlled rival squadron. The second format, Emergency Sortie, is a raid-style PvE encounter that unites eight pilots to tackle iconic boss fights and set-piece battles drawn from the history of the Ace Combat franchise. Additionally, the game will offer traditional competitive options, including limited-time four-versus-four team battles and eight-player free-for-all matches, which may feature specific player restrictions to ensure balanced competition.
Between sorties, players can gather in a virtual airforce base that serves as a shared social hub. In this digital lobby, player avatars can interact, hang out, and engage in recreational activities. The space features playable arcade cabinets loaded with classic Bandai Namco titles, such as Pac-Man, alongside a interactive jukebox that plays music from older Ace Combat soundtracks. According to the developers, this social space was directly inspired by community feedback and a desire to bring a global, yet previously disconnected, player base together in a single environment.
Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom, Ace Combat 8 producer Manabu Shimomoto explained that the decision to build a social hub was a direct response to the franchise's growing global audience. Shimomoto noted that while Ace Combat 7 was a major success, selling seven and a half million copies and maintaining a long-term player base, the community remained fragmented due to a lack of shared gathering spaces. The new digital lobby is intended to address this feedback, giving fans a dedicated venue to meet up and connect, which the development team hopes will foster long-term engagement for the sequel.
Progression in Ace Combat Online revolves around earning experience to level up, which unlocks new aircraft, specialized weaponry, and plane components for use in subsequent missions. Players can further customize their aircraft with unique abilities and cosmetic items earned by utilizing specific planes. The game will also feature a seasonal battle pass system called the Ace Pass, offered in both free and paid tiers. These seasons are scheduled to rotate every two months, and Bandai Namco has confirmed that any aircraft featured in a seasonal pass will remain available for direct purchase after that specific season concludes.
