Image Comics' Roam Reunites Paper Girls Creators Brian K. Vaughan And Cliff Chiang

The creative duo behind Paper Girls, writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang, are teaming up again for a new Image Comics ongoing series titled Roam. Featuring coloring by Matt Wilson and lettering by Jared Fletcher, the upcoming series debuts in February 2027 with an oversized first issue exploring youth and heroism.

During the 2026 New York Comic Con events, publisher Image Comics unveiled a major project that brings together acclaimed comic creators Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang for the first time in more than ten years. Their original collaboration on the successful Paper Girls series earned widespread critical praise, and this new initiative marks their long-awaited return as a creative team. The upcoming title, titled Roam, expands the partnership that previously yielded multiple Eisner Awards and established both individuals as premier talent within the independent comic book publishing space.

The upcoming narrative takes place in a futuristic setting where the ability to possess heroic powers is granted universally, though this extraordinary privilege comes with a strict limitation: individuals can only exercise superpowered abilities during their younger years. Beyond its high-concept premise, the narrative centers on the transitions and challenges associated with entering early adulthood. The series aims to frame these personal growth struggles through an expansive journey, highlighting an overarching quest undertaken by characters trying to discover their true place and companions in life.

The artistic side of the publication reunites key members from the original Paper Girls production crew. Cliff Chiang handles the primary interior artwork and cover designs, while colorist Matt Wilson and letterer Jared Fletcher contribute their expertise to establish the visual tone of the book. According to details shared by the publisher, the debut chapter will be significantly longer than standard monthly comic releases, launching as a 50-page oversized introductory issue intended to thoroughly establish its premise and cast.

In a statement regarding the project, writer Brian K. Vaughan confirmed that artist Cliff Chiang has already completed the visual work for the first several issues of the series prior to its public unveiling. Vaughan expressed immense enthusiasm for the fresh world designed by Chiang, Wilson, and Fletcher, emphasizing his appreciation toward comic shop retailers and the broader reader base for supporting original concepts that depart from established franchised properties.

Artist Cliff Chiang shared similar excitement about returning to work alongside his longtime collaborators, emphasizing that creating original fictional settings with familiar partners offers a unique creative thrill. Chiang mentioned that while Roam draws inspiration from a deep appreciation for the comic medium, its overall direction differs noticeably from their previous collaborative projects. He also acknowledged Image Comics for extending their long-standing publishing relationship, which originally began during the run of Paper Girls.

Retailers and readers will be able to purchase the inaugural issue of Roam when it arrives at comic book shops in February 2027. Orders for the debut chapter are being made available ahead of time through local comic book distributors as Image Comics prepares to launch the title as a flagship ongoing series for its early 2027 publishing slate.
