James Gunn Shoots Down Milly Alcock Supergirl Rumors, Shares Man Of Tomorrow Update

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn addressed online rumors regarding the DCU. He denied reports that Milly Alcock was let go as Supergirl and dispelled claims of bad test screenings for Man of Tomorrow. Gunn revealed he is screening an early director's cut for co-chairman Peter Safran a month ahead of schedule.

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn took to social media platform Threads on October 16 to directly respond to a wave of online rumors concerning upcoming live-action DCU projects. The filmmaker expressed fatigue regarding the ongoing stream of internet speculation, advising comic book movie fans that they need to stop paying attention to false information circulating across the web. During his response, Gunn clarified several specific claims regarding casting, directorial staff, and early audience reactions to upcoming feature films.

Among the highest-profile reports addressed was speculation that actress Milly Alcock had been released from her contract as Supergirl. Fan concern escalated after users noticed that several mentions and posts regarding her role as Kara Zor-El had been cleared from her personal Instagram page. Although some media uploads related to the superhero project remained publicly available on her feed, speculation spread online following her standalone feature's performance in theaters, leading some followers to conclude her time with the franchise had ended.

Gunn firmly refuted the claim that Alcock was departing the franchise, ensuring that the actress remains attached to the unified cinematic universe. Alcock initially debuted as the character in the 2025 feature film Superman before starring in her standalone Supergirl movie released in June. Her character retains a key presence in the overarching narrative, with Gunn previously confirming that she is scheduled to reprise her role alongside David Corenswet's Clark Kent in the upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

In addition to addressing Alcock's status, Gunn dismissed speculation that director Matt Reeves had exited his role leading The Batman Part 2. The project, which exists as part of DC's Elseworlds banner outside the core main-line continuity, already had key personnel confirm Reeves' continued leadership. Gunn reiterated those previous statements to reaffirm that the director has not abandoned the sequel, shutting down claims that the production had lost its primary creative voice.

Gunn also addressed rumors surrounding early feedback for Man of Tomorrow, which claimed the movie had received negative responses during advance test screenings due to a dark ending and the death of a major protagonist. Characterizing those allegations as entirely false, the executive revealed that test screening claims were impossible because no outside audience had viewed the movie yet. He stated that he was preparing to show an early director's cut of the feature to fellow DC Studios leader Peter Safran that very day, marking the first time anyone would view a compiled cut of the project.

The screening for Safran comes roughly a month earlier than originally anticipated internally. As the studio continues its production schedule toward the Superman sequel's planned release in July 2027, Gunn indicated he plans to step back from personally addressing every rumor that surfaces online. The executive noted that constantly correcting online speculation takes up considerable time, though he reiterated full confidence in the current direction of the upcoming slate of films.
