In Dungeon Settlers, You Build A Colony On Top Of A Teeming RPG Labyrinth In A Trim Take On Rimworld

Dungeon Settlers, a new hybrid colony simulator and party combat game from South Korean developer CanOpener, is launching in early access on September 4, 2026. The game blends Rimworld-style colony management with real-time tactical dungeon crawling, requiring players to harvest resources from dangerous underground labyrinths to sustain their surface settlements.

The core gameplay loop of Dungeon Settlers relies on a symbiotic relationship between surface-level survival and underground exploration. Players are tasked with building and maintaining a colony on a harsh surface world characterized by stunted vegetation and toxic lakes. To construct basic amenities and gather essential crafting materials, such as grass and twigs for torches, players must repeatedly dispatch teams of colonists into procedurally generated subterranean dungeons.

Combat and exploration within these underground labyrinths play out in real time, drawing comparisons to tactical role-playing games like Baldur's Gate. Players can pause the action to issue specific commands, though characters also behave autonomously based on a customizable priority list of tasks. The subterranean environments are highly hazardous, populated by aggressive creatures ranging from slimes and rat swarms to powerful stone golems.

While exploring the depths, players can establish temporary outposts by building barricades, setting up bedrolls, and lighting cooking fires to bolster their party's morale. However, long-term underground habitation is discouraged by design. While defeated monsters will eventually respawn in the caverns, valuable treasures and plant resources do not replenish, and characters suffer from a negative mood modifier the longer they remain beneath the surface.

The game's interface and control scheme present some initial hurdles due to the competing design philosophies of its two parent genres. Early impressions of the demo highlight a cluttered user interface filled with numerous menus, windows, and hotbar icons that can be difficult to navigate. Additionally, the targeting and action feedback can feel imprecise, occasionally leading to accidental movement commands or mistaken character selections during hectic combat encounters.

Developer CanOpener has utilized generative artificial intelligence to handle the game's localization, noting that while AI was used for the bulk of the translation work, human translators did review or translate certain languages. This approach highlights an ongoing trend in the video game industry, where machine translation is increasingly being adopted to localize titles for global audiences, despite the complex artistic demands of professional translation.

Dungeon Settlers is scheduled to launch in Steam Early Access on September 4, 2026. The early access period is expected to provide the developers with the opportunity to refine the user interface, improve control responsiveness, and balance the game's survival mechanics based on player feedback.
