It’s Officially The Dawn Of A New Era For 'magic The Gathering' Universes Beyond

Wizards of the Coast is elevating its Magic: The Gathering crossover line with Darkhold Destiny, a 2027 Marvel set featuring an original storyline, a brand-new superhero, and highly complex gameplay. Lead designers Mark Rosewater and Aaron Forsyth discuss how this ambitious release bridges the gap between Universes Beyond and core Magic sets.

The Universes Beyond initiative in Magic: The Gathering has historically stood apart from the game's core, original-multiverse sets. While previous crossover products featuring major intellectual properties like Final Fantasy, Spider-Man, and The Lord of the Rings achieved massive commercial success and attracted new audiences, they often lacked the intricate narrative arcs, custom character designs, and deep mechanical complexity that define standard Magic releases. Wizards of the Coast aims to change this dynamic in 2027 with its first crossover set of the year, Darkhold Destiny.

Darkhold Destiny represents a significant evolution for the Universes Beyond brand by introducing an original narrative set directly within the Marvel universe. The plot revolves around the iconic villains Hela and Dormammu seizing control of the powerful Darkhold to spread devastation across the Marvel multiverse. In response, a coalition of magically inclined heroes, including Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Thor, unites to combat the threat. This marks a departure from typical crossover sets, which generally function as card-based showcases of existing lore rather than vehicles for brand-new storytelling.

According to the development team at Wizards of the Coast, the decision to craft an original narrative developed organically. The designers initially set aside specific Marvel characters that aligned closely with Magic's traditional aesthetic, such as sorcerers, zombies, and ancient deities. This curation eventually inspired them to build a cohesive, original plot. Marvel supported the creative direction, encouraging the game designers to push the boundaries of the setting and characters. To complement the card game's release, Marvel plans to publish a tie-in comic book detailing the same storyline.

The collaboration also yielded a completely new superhero. During the narrative planning phase, the design team realized the story required a character archetype not yet present in Marvel's roster. Wizards of the Coast pitched five distinct concepts to Marvel, which selected one that aligned with its own internal development goals. While the identity of this new hero remains under wraps, Magic's head designer, Mark Rosewater, expressed hope that the character will eventually transition into mainstream Marvel comics, comparing the situation to how Harley Quinn transitioned from television to the core DC universe.

In addition to narrative innovations, Darkhold Destiny addresses common gameplay limitations associated with previous crossover sets. Past Universes Beyond releases sometimes suffered from smaller card pools, which restricted the strategic depth of Limited formats like Draft and Sealed. Rosewater confirmed that the upcoming Marvel set will fully support draft archetypes across all ten two-color combinations, a feature not always guaranteed in crossover products. This design choice ensures a more robust and varied experience for players building decks from scratch.

Aaron Forsyth, the senior vice president of design and creative for Magic, emphasized that Darkhold Destiny is engineered to be an expert-level set. The design team intentionally leaned into complex mechanics, utilizing a wide array of artifacts, enchantments, and sorceries rather than relying solely on combat between legendary creatures. This high level of complexity was chosen because the developers knew the set would appeal directly to dedicated Magic players who enjoy intricate gameplay systems.

The ambitious scope of Darkhold Destiny could influence the future trajectory of the Universes Beyond line. Because these collaborative projects require years of advance planning and complex licensing negotiations, any strategic shifts will take time to manifest in future releases. However, Rosewater noted that successfully executing an original story and character design with Marvel establishes a precedent, making similar high-concept partnerships much more viable for future crossover projects.
