Magic: The Gathering Returns To Marvel With Darkhold Destiny

Wizards of the Coast is launching Darkhold Destiny, a new Marvel crossover set for Magic: The Gathering. Arriving in April 2027, this original multiverse narrative features Doctor Strange, Asgardian gods, and distinct magical schools.

Wizards of the Coast is expanding its collaboration with Marvel through an upcoming Magic: The Gathering release titled Darkhold Destiny. Following previous crossovers centered on Spider-Man and broader Marvel superheroes, this third installment shifts focus toward a supernatural, fantasy-driven narrative. Instead of adhering strictly to traditional comic book settings, the set incorporates iconic figures such as Doctor Strange, Thor, and various Asgardian characters into an original storyline built directly for the card game's broader multiverse universe.

The central narrative framework follows an interdimensional threat initiated by the villains Dormammu and Hela, who utilize the power of the Darkhold to launch an invasion across the multiverse. To counter this cosmic danger, Doctor Strange joins forces with Thor and several other Marvel heroes. Because the plot revolves around mystical artifacts and sorcerers, the set places an heavy emphasis on spellcasting mechanics, featuring a variety of instants, sorceries, and specialized enchantments tailored to the thematic conflict.

Mechanically, spellcasting within Darkhold Destiny is divided across three distinct magical classifications: Arcane, Divine, and Dark. Arcane magic correlates with Doctor Strange and his fellow sorcerers, whereas Divine magic is utilized primarily by Asgardian deities and related entities. Dark magic is mostly wielded by the narrative's antagonists, though select antiheroes such as Ghost Rider also manipulate it. Notably, Wizards of the Coast is reintroducing the Arcane card subtype for instants and sorceries, marking its first appearance since the 2005 Saviors of Kamigawa set, although the legacy Splice Onto Arcane mechanic will not be returning.

The customized internal narrative granted Wizards of the Coast's creative team increased artistic freedom when designing character illustrations. While earlier sets featured figures like the Scarlet Witch in conventional comic book attire, her visual presentation in Darkhold Destiny reflects a distinct Magic: The Gathering aesthetic while preserving recognizable elements such as her headpiece. This approach allows the featured Marvel heroes and villains to feel naturally integrated into the trading card game's distinct artistic landscape.

Product offerings for Darkhold Destiny will follow standard release structures alongside several specialized items. Consumers can expect traditional Booster Packs, Collector Boosters, standard Bundles, and a special Gift Bundle. Both bundle variations are scheduled to include a mechanically unique promotional card. Furthermore, the expansion will introduce two dedicated Scene Boxes, with each box containing six mechanically unique cards designed specifically for collectors and active players.

The release will also feature four preconstructed Commander decks, each themed around specific factions and color combinations. The lineup includes Strange Academy utilizing White, Blue, and Black; Gods of Asgard using White, Red, and Green; Midnight Sons employing White and Black; and Lords of Hel operating on Black and Red. Every Commander deck will additionally receive a dedicated Collector's Edition variant featuring an all-foil card presentation.

To introduce players to the upcoming set's lore, Wizards of the Coast is collaborating with Image Comics to publish an introductory comic book in February. A second comic installment will follow closer to the set's official launch, which is currently scheduled for April 2027. These promotional publications will offer fans their initial look at the original storyline before the cards hit store shelves.
