Marvel Officially Announces New Disney Plus Series 'zodiac'

At New York Comic Con, Marvel Studios officially announced Zodiac, an upcoming live-action spy-thriller series scheduled to debut on Disney Plus in 2028. The production is set to begin filming in London in the spring of 2027, marking a notable continuation of Marvel Television's live-action slate despite recent production scale-backs and cancellations.

During a presentation at New York Comic Con, Marvel Studios officially unveiled a new live-action television project titled Zodiac. The upcoming series is being developed by Marvel Television and is scheduled to premiere on the Disney Plus streaming platform at some point in 2028. The announcement confirms that the studio is continuing to pursue live-action episodic storytelling, even after adjusting its production strategies in recent years.

Brad Winderbaum, who serves as the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, shared the initial details of the project during the convention. Winderbaum characterized Zodiac as a spy thriller and revealed that principal photography is scheduled to commence in London during the spring of 2027. He also noted that the casting process for the series is currently underway, though no specific actors have been attached to the project publicly.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the title of the series points to established elements within Marvel Comics lore. In the comic books, Zodiac is the name associated with multiple criminal syndicates whose members adopt personas based on the Western astrological calendar. These groups are frequently depicted under the leadership of a villain named Taurus and have historically served as recurring adversaries for both the Avengers and the intelligence agency SHIELD.

It remains unconfirmed whether the television adaptation will directly feature this classic supervillain group. However, observers have noted that the official logo for the series hints at these connections. The letter O in the title graphic appears to incorporate a design resembling a zodiac wheel, while the letter A features a stylized eagle motif that closely mirrors the emblem used by SHIELD.

The source material offers other potential directions for the narrative. In another comic book storyline, the Zodiac was a coalition of leaders representing powerful factions such as Hydra, SHIELD, and the Hand. This alliance was organized by an individual operating under the alias Aries, who was eventually revealed to be Leonardo da Vinci. This group sought to recover a collection of highly powerful artifacts and counted prominent figures like Nick Fury, his brother Jake Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Baron Strucker, and Daniel Whitehall among its ranks.

The announcement of Zodiac comes during a period of transition for Marvel Television, which has noticeably reduced its output of live-action series. Earlier this year, the studio announced a second season for its Disney Plus series Wonder Man, only to cancel the project a few months later. Additionally, highly anticipated follow-up seasons for established shows such as Moon Knight, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel have not materialized on the studio's upcoming release schedule.

Despite these cancellations and a general slowdown, Marvel Television continues to advance several live-action projects. The third and final season of Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to debut next year, and a new series titled VisionQuest is set to arrive on Disney Plus next week. Industry reports indicate that the television division currently has between three and five live-action projects in active development, contradicting rumors that the studio had completely abandoned the format.

Alongside its live-action efforts, Marvel Television is maintaining a robust lineup of animated projects. The division is preparing to launch the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in January, and a third season of X-Men '97 is currently in production. Furthermore, the studio is developing three standalone Marvel Zombies specials that are destined for Disney Plus.
