Star Citizen Spinoff Squadron 42 Has Been Delayed Yet Again, Citing Everyone Going Gaga For GTA 6, Even If It Isn't Coming To PC Yet
Cloud Imperium Games has delayed its single-player Star Citizen spinoff, Squadron 42, to the second quarter of 2027. Studio head Chris Roberts explained that the decision was made to avoid competing with the massive media attention surrounding the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, even though Rockstar's title is not initially launching on PC.
The long-delayed single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, Squadron 42, has faced another setback. Developer Cloud Imperium Games has officially pushed the game's release window back to the second quarter of 2027. This decision marks yet another delay for a project that has been in development for over a decade and has repeatedly missed its projected launch targets.
According to an official blog post by studio head Chris Roberts, the decision to delay the game was heavily influenced by the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Roberts expressed a strong desire to avoid launching the highly anticipated space title into what he described as the "attention buzz saw" of Rockstar's upcoming blockbuster. The studio head noted that the sheer volume of media coverage and content creator focus dedicated to the Grand Theft Auto sequel would leave very little room for other games to gain traction.
Interestingly, Roberts acknowledged that Grand Theft Auto 6 is not even scheduled to launch on PC this November. Despite the platform disparity, Cloud Imperium Games believes the cultural footprint of the release will be so massive that it will dominate the gaming landscape across all platforms, drowning out the marketing efforts and media coverage of competing titles like Squadron 42.
This latest delay shifts the release window from the previously announced late 2026 target. During CitizenCon 2024, the developer had committed to shipping the game in the fourth quarter of 2026, aiming for a release around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE). Roberts defended the schedule change by emphasizing that twelve years of "blood, sweat and tears" have been invested into creating this spiritual successor to Wing Commander, making a rushed or poorly timed launch unacceptable.
Development on Squadron 42 originally began in 2014, following a year of studio expansion, hiring, and the release of Star Citizen's initial Hangar module in 2013. The project was initially slated to reach players' hands in 2014, meaning this latest delay pushes the game's timeline to more than a decade past its original release window. The prolonged development cycle has frequently drawn skepticism from onlookers and backers alike.
To appease eager fans, Cloud Imperium Games plans to offer a select group of people an early look at the game. A small number of original crowdfunding backers and prominent Star Citizen content creators will be granted the opportunity to play Squadron 42 on October 9 and 10. The studio has indicated that further announcements regarding launch plans and a specific release date will be shared during this event or shortly thereafter.
When it eventually launches, Squadron 42 is set to feature an unexpectedly star-studded Hollywood cast. The voice and motion-capture lineup includes prominent actors such as Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and Henry Cavill. Additionally, comedic actor Eric Wareheim is slated to appear in the game, adding a unique flavor to the high-profile ensemble.
