RuneScape Arrives On XBOX For The First Time In 25 Years With Survival Adventure RuneScape: Dragonwilds!

For the first time in the franchise's 25-year history, a RuneScape game is coming to Xbox consoles. RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a co-operative survival RPG adventure developed by Jagex, is scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026. Players will explore the forgotten continent of Ashenfall, leveling skills up to 99 and wielding unique Skill Spells to survive and eventually defeat the formidable Dragon Queen, Kuldra.

The legendary RuneScape franchise is officially making its debut on Xbox consoles with the upcoming release of RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026, this new title marks the first time in the intellectual property's 25-year history that a RuneScape game will be playable on the platform. Developed by Jagex, the game will be available on Xbox Series X|S and will also be included in the Xbox Game Pass library on day one, offering a fresh way for console players to experience the beloved fantasy universe.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is designed as a hand-crafted survival RPG adventure that supports solo play as well as co-operative multiplayer for up to four players. Rather than stepping into the shoes of a fabled hero or a pre-destined champion, players begin their journey as ordinary adventurers who must learn to navigate and tame the wilderness. The ultimate goal of the adventure is to gather resources, build fortifications, and gain enough power to challenge and conquer the ferocious Dragon Queen, Kuldra, who looms as a constant threat over the land.

The game is set on Ashenfall, a magical and previously forgotten continent of Gielinor, the world well-known to RuneScape veterans. This expansive landmass is steeped in the franchise's rich lore and is filled with dangerous environments, perilous vaults, and ruthless dragons. Over the course of an 18-month development period leading up to the 1.0 release, the game's map has tripled in size. It now features three massive regions complete with unique area bosses, material upgrades, and iconic RuneScape gear, alongside a sweeping soundtrack that blends reorchestrated classics with hours of brand-new music.

Progression in Dragonwilds stays true to the franchise's core identity by allowing players to level up various martial, magical, and mundane skills from level 1 all the way to 99. As players advance, they are rewarded with unique abilities and powerful Skill Spells that utilize the wild anima flowing through Ashenfall. These spells are designed to turn basic survival tasks into efficient, magical actions. Players can summon spectral axes to chop down trees instantly, blink away from incoming danger, explode ore veins with a snap of their fingers, conjure tornadoes to harvest fish from lakes, and even transform bones into peaches.

In addition to magic and skill progression, survival in Ashenfall requires players to build and fortify their own homes. The game features an intricate building system with hundreds of unique pieces, allowing players to construct highly customized bases to defend themselves against the constant threat of dragon attacks. Players will also need to prepare potions, craft high-tier gear, and hunt down legendary RuneScape creatures such as towering Zogres, Chromatic Dragons, Kalphites, and the newly introduced, fearsome Garou as they follow a trail of destruction to locate the Dragon Queen.

Jagex has emphasized that community feedback has been central to the development of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, shaping the game's features and its future trajectory. Player input during the development phase has already led to the early introduction of dedicated servers, new combat mechanics, and additional quest content. Following the 1.0 launch on September 15, Jagex plans to support the game with an expansive post-launch content roadmap stretching into 2027 and beyond, ensuring that both solo players and co-operative crews have new mysteries to uncover for years to come.
