D&D Could Go Back To The Underdark Soon With A New Campaign

Wizards of the Coast has dropped several hints pointing to a potential return to the Underdark in Dungeons & Dragons. Clues from recent playtest materials and the announcement of the D&D Icons initiative, which features legendary author R.A. Salvatore, suggest that a new campaign setting or adventure set in the game's iconic subterranean realm may be on the horizon.

Dungeons & Dragons players may soon be headed back into the subterranean depths of the Underdark, according to several clues dropped by publisher Wizards of the Coast. While the lightless, monster-filled realm has long been a staple of classic campaign settings like the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk, it has not been the focus of an official, dedicated product in roughly a decade. Recent developments suggest this prolonged absence from the depths is about to end.

The first major hint comes from the release of "Underdark Options" playtest material in Unearthed Arcana. This playtest content introduces character subclasses and lore elements specifically tailored for subterranean adventuring. Historically, the release of such targeted playtest materials serves as a precursor to official book announcements, signaling that a product centered on the Underdark is actively in development for the game's current lineup.

A second, highly significant clue emerged during Gen Con 2026 at the D&D Vision Keynote. Actor and producer Joe Manganiello announced he is leading a new initiative called D&D Icons. This project brings together legendary creators from the franchise's history to develop original products. Among the announced collaborators are Dragonlance creators Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Greyhawk expert Luke Gygax, and R.A. Salvatore, the highly prolific author of The Legend of Drizzt novel series.

While Weis, Hickman, and Gygax have defined projects lined up for their respective signature settings, Salvatore's specific role remains unconfirmed. However, Salvatore is widely credited with popularizing the Underdark and its dark elf inhabitants, the drow, across dozens of novels. Observers speculate that Salvatore's involvement in the D&D Icons initiative strongly points to him designing or contributing to a new Underdark-focused product, which would hold immense appeal for longtime fans of his work.

The Underdark itself is a vast, hostile network of caverns beneath the surface of various D&D worlds, known as Underoerth in Greyhawk and Khyber in Eberron. First introduced by co-creator Gary Gygax in the late 1970s and formally named in 1986, the region is famous for its extreme danger. Unlike surface adventures, the Underdark offers no safe havens or friendly towns, and it is home to some of the game's most iconic and deadly monsters, including Beholders, Mind Flayers, and the duergar.

The latest playtest material specifically highlights Deep Imaskar, a relatively unexplored city hidden in the deepest reaches of the Underdark. The playtest introduces a new form of magic called "unlight," which the city's original settlers used to survive. This sudden focus on a highly specific, historically obscure location suggests that any upcoming product might center on Deep Imaskar, offering players a fresh look at a mysterious corner of the classic setting rather than a simple retread of familiar territory.
