Developer Rebel Wolves has officially released its debut action roleplaying game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Published by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe, the title is built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5. The launch is accompanied by a brand-new trailer showcasing the dark fantasy world, story, and supernatural combat mechanics that players will encounter. The game is available in a standard edition for $69.99, as well as an Eclipse Edition for $79.99, which bundles the base game with a digital world compendium, a digital soundtrack, and an exclusive digital comic book.
The narrative is set against the backdrop of 14th-century Europe, a period ravaged by bloody conflicts and the devastating Black Death. Amid this widespread societal collapse, vampires and other mythological creatures have emerged from the shadows to seize control. The game's primary setting is Vale Sangora, an isolated valley situated beyond the Carpathian Mountains. While the valley's human inhabitants initially viewed their vampire rulers, known as the vrakhiri, as benevolent saviors because their blood cured the plague, the reality of their reign has turned grim. The vrakhiri demand a regular tribute of blood, and citizens who displease the regime have begun disappearing without a trace.
Players step into the role of Coen, a young man from the silver-mining town of Laslea. After rebelling against his vampire masters, Coen was cursed with vampirism as a punishment. However, the transformation process went awry. Instead of becoming a standard thrall, Coen became a "dawnwalker"—a unique entity who retains his human form during the day but transforms into a vampire at night. This dual existence frees him from the direct mental control of his sire, allowing him to chart his own path. The stakes are incredibly high, as the valley's new ruler, Brencis, plans to execute Coen's family and the rest of his home village in 30 days to mark his coronation and cement his absolute rule.
This 30-day timeline serves as a core gameplay mechanic, establishing a persistent ticking clock where time moves forward whenever players embark on quests. Because time is limited, players cannot complete every task or help every character, forcing difficult choices about which objectives to prioritize. The narrative structure adapts to these decisions, allowing players to choose whether to focus entirely on rescuing Coen's family, seek direct vengeance against his sire, or spend precious time preparing and gathering resources. Players can choose to confront the threat entirely alone or attempt to forge alliances with the valley's oppressed human population.
Uniting the humans of Vale Sangora presents a significant social challenge, as the local rebels are highly suspicious of trading one vampire ruler for another. To earn their trust, Coen must demonstrate that his humanity remains intact despite his curse. Additionally, players can bolster the rebellion's combat capabilities by securing silver, a material that is physically loathsome to the vrakhiri. While the silver mines of Laslea are heavily guarded by the vampires, rumors suggest a massive hoard of stolen treasure lies hidden in a network of caves beneath the city of Svartrau. Acquiring this silver allows players to upgrade the resistance's weaponry for the eventual assault on Brencis' stronghold.
The game features two distinct gameplay loops tied directly to the day-and-night cycle, with each phase offering unique abilities and approaches to challenges. During the day, Coen utilizes his human form, relying on traditional swordplay and powerful witchcraft. Embracing witchcraft allows players to learn reality-bending truths, though the game notes that only Coen's human side can endure the physical scars required to master these magical arts. When night falls, Coen gains access to supernatural vampiric gifts, allowing him to defy gravity, utilize devastating claws, and channel brutal physical rage to overpower his enemies.
Beyond the vampire threat, the hand-crafted open world of Vale Sangora is filled with diverse environments and legendary monsters. Players can explore lush forests, vast plains, treacherous swamps, steep mountain peaks, and medieval settlements. The wilderness is inhabited by dangerous creatures of myth, including tatzelwurms that dwell in the muddy swamps and kobolds that infest the deep caves and mines. Ancient ruins scattered across the landscape also hold sorcerous secrets and restless spirits, offering brave players the chance to uncover forgotten history and powerful artifacts that can aid them in their fight against the vrakhiri.
