Fable Dev Happy About Delay To 2027 To Avoid “Chaotic Window,” And We All Know That Means GTA 6
Fable director Ralph Fulton expressed relief over the game's delay to February 2027, noting that shifting the release date allows the RPG to avoid a highly congested late 2026 launch window dominated by major industry blockbusters.
The upcoming Fable game from Microsoft was originally scheduled to debut in late 2026, but its release has been officially pushed back to February 23, 2027 [1.1]. Despite the delay, game director Ralph Fulton shared that he feels highly optimistic about the new launch timing. In a recent interview, Fulton explained that moving the game out of its initial late 2026 window allows the development team to steer clear of what he described as a chaotic release period.
Speaking with IGN, Fulton acknowledged that the reasoning behind the scheduling shift is obvious to observers. He admitted that he had been eagerly anticipating a 2026 launch and was not particularly pleased about having to hold an all-hands meeting with his team in January to deliver the news that they would not be shipping the game that year. However, he emphasized that the decision was ultimately the correct path forward for the project.
Fulton strongly defended the logic of the delay, stating that the underlying rationale is completely sound. He expressed gratitude that the team is bypassing the highly competitive late 2026 window, which is set to feature massive industry releases. By shifting to early 2027, Fable successfully avoids launching in close proximity to major titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is scheduled for October 23, and Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to debut on November 19.
Although Fulton did not explicitly name Grand Theft Auto 6 during his latest interview, he has previously been open about the impact of Rockstar's upcoming blockbuster. In comments made in June, the director openly stated that pushing Fable to 2027 was a strategic move to avoid an incredibly congested release period, specifically highlighting the importance of avoiding a direct clash with the next Grand Theft Auto installment.
According to Fulton, securing a less contested release window provides the development team with a valuable opportunity. He believes that launching during a quieter period will allow Fable to stand out and create a major cultural moment of its own. He emphasized that the extra breathing room will help the game secure the level of public attention and industry focus that it truly deserves.
The discussion around the game's timeline comes alongside fresh gameplay reveals. Combat footage from Fable recently surfaced online during Gamescom, drawing mixed reactions and some criticism regarding its polish. However, hands-on previews from media outlets, including GameSpot, reported a much more positive impression of the actual gameplay experience. Fable is currently slated to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
