Ridley Scott's 158-Minute War Action Epic Is Officially A Global Streaming Sensation

Director Ridley Scott's 2023 historical epic Napoleon has found a second life on streaming. Despite a disappointing theatrical run that failed to recoup its costs, the film has climbed to the fourth spot on Apple TV Plus's Top Movies chart, drawing in new audiences with both its original cut and an extended director's cut.

Renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott is celebrated for his grand cinematic visions, spanning iconic science-fiction staples like Blade Runner and the Alien franchise to massive historical dramas such as Gladiator and its sequel, Gladiator II. However, not every high-budget project from the director has enjoyed immediate success. His 2023 biographical epic, Napoleon, struggled to find its footing during its initial theatrical release, ultimately failing to make a significant impact at the box office before transitioning to home viewing platforms.

During its time in theaters, the sprawling historical drama was widely viewed as a financial disappointment. In the domestic markets of the United States and Canada, the film managed to secure only $61.5 million. While it performed slightly better in international territories by bringing in $160.9 million, its cumulative global box office total of $222.4 million fell short of expectations. For a time, it appeared the costly production was destined to be forgotten once its theatrical run concluded.

Despite its initial struggles, the film has experienced a major resurgence thanks to its availability on digital platforms. After being accessible on Apple TV Plus for two years, Napoleon has steadily climbed the streaming charts. It currently occupies the number four position on the platform's Top Movies list, proving that streaming services can successfully introduce older theatrical releases to entirely new audiences who bypassed them in cinemas.

The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the ambitious French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, depicting his relentless and ruthless pursuit of power. Screenwriter David Scarpa anchored the narrative around the volatile and complex relationship between the emperor and his wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, who is portrayed by Vanessa Kirby. While the movie attempts to balance historical facts with dramatic fabrication, it has faced criticism for its creative liberties.

Upon its release, French critics and audiences heavily criticized the production for its numerous historical inaccuracies. Additionally, viewers pointed out issues with the film's uneven pacing, noting that certain narrative segments felt sluggish and disconnected from the high-energy, chaotic battle sequences. Despite these criticisms, Phoenix's performance has been widely praised for capturing the complex, megalomaniacal, and charismatic nature of the historical figure.

To address the limitations of the standard 158-minute theatrical version, an extended director's cut has also been made available on Apple TV Plus. Spanning a massive 205 minutes, this longer version delves deeper into the historical period of the French Terror and provides additional background to flesh out Joséphine's character. While this streaming success may not recover the financial losses from its original theatrical run, its high chart placement serves as a strong indicator of sustained viewer interest.
