Mortal Shell 2 Gets Its First Major Update, Adding In Extra Beacons, Useful New Items, And Making Riposte Damage Scaling Actually Work
Cold Symmetry has released the first major update for Mortal Shell 2, introducing new items, additional beacons, and significant adjustments to the game's riposte mechanics. The patch aims to improve performance and refine gameplay balance just over a week after the sequel's launch.
Just over a week after its initial launch, the Soulslike sequel Mortal Shell 2 has received its first major post-launch update. While developer Cold Symmetry previously deployed a balance patch on the game's release day, this latest update introduces a substantial list of feature additions, mechanical adjustments, and performance optimizations to refine the overall player experience.
Among the most notable additions are several new items designed to assist players during their journey. These include fragile tarstones, which represent a new category of tarstone that shatters once its durability is fully depleted. Players can also acquire a glimpse stone, an item that gradually wears down as opponents are defeated before eventually breaking apart to yield glimpses. Additionally, a new item called Egon's stone has been introduced, allowing players to resurrect at a dungeon's entrance at the expense of the item's durability, with the added benefit of preserving all accumulated gloom upon death.
Exploration and navigation across the game's environments have also been addressed in this update. Players will find new beacons placed throughout the Fainweald and Mammon regions, though the developer notes these particular beacons are only functional during daytime hours. Furthermore, various items have been distributed across the game world, and certain chests that were previously causing issues have been reset. Players who successfully complete specific questlines can also unlock two new cosmetic headpieces: one styled after a hand-stitched frog and another resembling a potato sack with a single eyehole.
Combat mechanics, particularly the riposte system, have undergone a major overhaul to ensure fairer gameplay. Riposte damage now scales directly with the health pool of enemies, a change intended to alleviate the steep difficulty curve in night mode and new game plus. The calculation and application of riposte damage are now handled directly by the riposte action itself, resolving previous bugs where damage would either register twice or fail to apply entirely.
In addition to damage scaling, the responsiveness and safety of performing ripostes have been improved. The recovery phase for many player ripostes has been shortened, allowing players to regain control of their character much faster. The developer has also standardized the invulnerability windows across all ripostes, ensuring that players remain protected until the very end of the animation rather than having the invulnerability expire prematurely.
Beyond player mechanics, Cold Symmetry has adjusted enemy behavior and game performance. The maximum limits for enemy tracking and magnetism have been tuned to be more forgiving, with the studio planning to make further individual adjustments in future updates. To resolve performance bottlenecks, the developer has reduced enemy density in several highly populated areas. Finally, the update addresses visual presentation by fixing multiple cutscenes where characters previously behaved awkwardly, such as staring blankly or turning away inappropriately.
