Red Rising Greenlit For Movie Adaptation With Author Pierce Brown To Produce
Paramount Pictures has officially approved a feature film adaptation of Pierce Brown's Red Rising novel series. Francis Lawrence is attached to direct, with scriptwriter Justin Rhodes adapting the sci-fi story.
Paramount Pictures has formally approved a cinematic version of Red Rising, bringing author Pierce Brown's expansive science-fiction universe to the silver screen over ten years following the debut novel's 2014 publication. The project marks a major milestone for the popular book franchise as it transitions into a high-profile Hollywood feature film.
Francis Lawrence has been chosen to helm the upcoming adaptation as director. Lawrence brings extensive experience with young adult source material, having previously directed nearly every entry in the Hunger Games cinematic franchise, excluding only the initial film handled by Gary Ross. His recent directing credits also include an adaptation of Stephen King's The Long Walk alongside the forthcoming project Sunrise on the Reaping.
In addition to his directorial duties, Lawrence will help produce the picture under his about:blank banner alongside partner Cameron MacConomy. The production team also features Francesco Goedhuis as well as original series novelist Pierce Brown. Celebrating the development on social media, Brown publicly expressed enthusiasm for the creative partners assembled for the project.
Screenwriting responsibilities for the feature film have been assigned to Justin Rhodes. Rhodes' writing credentials include work on Terminator: Dark Fate, Liminal, and Traveler. Notably, he is also attached to write Netflix's upcoming live-action Bioshock project, which currently remains early in its development pipeline.
The literary foundation for the film centers on a sprawling narrative that is expected to conclude with a seventh final book, which currently lacks an official launch date. The storyline takes place across a futuristic society stratified by a rigorous social structure defined by assigned colors. The narrative focuses on Darrow, a member of the lowest-ranking Red caste who works in grueling subterranean Martian mines.
Darrow's narrative begins under the false impression that his caste's manual labor is essential to making Mars livable for future generations, only to discover the planet was terraformed long ago. Upon uncovering this massive lie, Darrow embarks on a high-stakes mission to covertly join the ruling Gold caste, igniting a prolonged conflict that spans across the solar system to dismantle the oppressive hierarchy.
The greenlight for the Red Rising movie represents the latest major literary adaptation moving forward in the entertainment industry. It joins other recent high-profile book projects, including Prime Video's television adaptation of Fourth Wing, which recently announced actors Emilio Sakraya and Esther McGregor in its lead roles.
