Cyberpunk 2077 Is Getting A Movie Adaptation At Call Of Duty Film Studio, Transformers Producer On Board

Paramount has announced a Cyberpunk 2077 movie adaptation, co-produced by CD Projekt Red and Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Paramount has officially announced plans to develop a feature film adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, marking the latest high-profile video game property to make the leap to the silver screen. The studio is already deeply invested in gaming adaptations, with a previously announced Call of Duty movie currently scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2028.

According to a report from Deadline, veteran film producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, widely recognized for his extensive work on the highly successful Transformers cinematic franchise, is attached to produce the upcoming project. In a move that is likely to reassure fans of the franchise, game developer CD Projekt Red is also directly involved as a producer on the film.

The direct involvement of CD Projekt Red stands in contrast to some other recent high-profile Hollywood adaptations. For instance, developer Larian Studios has no involvement in the upcoming Baldur's Gate 3 television show, and Naughty Dog stepped away from the third season of HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, raising concerns among some fans regarding creative control.

Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, expressed strong enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that Paramount shares the developer's creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk universe. Paweł Sasko, the associate game director for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2, also shared his excitement online, enthusiastically addressing the game's community.

The announcement comes during a period of major corporate transition for Paramount, following its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and the subsequent merger of the two entities. Moving forward, the combined parent company will operate under the name Skydance. Despite these corporate shifts, the studio remains committed to theatrical releases, with plans to debut at least 30 films in theaters annually, suggesting both the Call of Duty and Cyberpunk 2077 projects are destined for the big screen.

The Cyberpunk 2077 film project is currently in its earliest stages of development. Paramount has not yet announced a director, cast members, or a projected release date. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is continuing to expand the franchise on the interactive side, with a game sequel, currently referred to as Cyberpunk 2, actively in development.

The film deal represents another major milestone for a game that has undergone a dramatic public redemption. Following a notoriously troubled launch in December 2020, CD Projekt Red spent years updating and refining the title. This effort culminated in the massive 2.0 update and the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023, helping the game surpass 40 million copies sold.
