PS5 Adds Free Live And On-Demand Movie And TV Channels, In Exchange For Watching Ads
Sony has launched a free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) service directly on the PlayStation 5 in the United States. Operating under the name "Live TV on PS5," the new feature offers users access to more than 100 live and on-demand channels spanning movies, television series, sports, news, and anime, with plans to expand to other regions like Canada in the future.
Sony has unexpectedly introduced a free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) service directly to the PlayStation 5 console, allowing users to stream a variety of movies and television shows without a subscription fee in exchange for viewing advertisements. This move taps into the rapidly growing FAST market, which has seen significant traction through established platforms such as Roku, Tubi, and Pluto. While PlayStation 5 owners could previously access these third-party services through dedicated individual applications, Sony is now entering the space directly with its own integrated broadcasting hub [1.1].
The newly launched service, officially branded as "Live TV on PS5," is powered by Sony Pictures Television and is currently available exclusively to console owners in the United States. The platform launches with a robust lineup of more than 100 live channels alongside a selection of on-demand programming. The content catalog is designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences, featuring dedicated sections for news, sports, movies, television series, and anime.
Accessing the new streaming hub is designed to be straightforward for console owners. Users can navigate to the Media tab on their PlayStation 5 dashboard and select the newly added "Live TV on PS5" icon. From there, viewers are prompted to select "Sign In With My PlayStation Account" to link their existing credentials and immediately begin streaming content. Sony has confirmed that the service will receive ongoing updates over time to introduce additional channels and content, and the company is actively planning to expand the feature to Canada and other international regions in the future.
The available entertainment catalog features a diverse mix of networks and genres. Movie enthusiasts can access channels such as MovieSphere, 50 Cent Action, FilmRise Free Movies, Cinevault, and Sony One Horror Hits. For television fans, the service broadcasts popular series including The Walking Dead, Community, Unsolved Mysteries, and Hell's Kitchen. Anime fans are also well-served, with the platform hosting dedicated channels for Naruto, Sailor Moon, and Death Note, alongside curated content streams from Crunchyroll.
Beyond traditional entertainment, the platform caters to sports fans and news followers alike. Live TV on PS5 includes sports programming from major brands such as Fox Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now, and the UFC. Viewers can also stay informed through various news and weather channels, or watch popular internet creator content, including episodes of the hot-sauce interview show Hot Ones and programming from sports and pop-culture outlet The Ringer.
This launch marks a return to television delivery for Sony, albeit under a very different business model. The company previously operated PlayStation Vue, a paid live television streaming service that competed with traditional cable providers. However, Sony ultimately shut down PlayStation Vue in 2020, citing the high operational costs associated with running a premium, paid television service. By pivoting to the FAST model, Sony is aligning with broader industry trends, as major entertainment giants like Disney and Netflix are reportedly exploring similar ad-supported streaming options.
With this update, Sony establishes a distinct advantage over its primary console competitor, Microsoft. While the Xbox platform offers access to third-party FAST applications like Pluto and Tubi, Microsoft does not currently host its own proprietary, integrated ad-supported television network. By embedding a free, native streaming service directly into the PlayStation 5 user interface, Sony provides a seamless entertainment option that requires no additional downloads or external subscriptions.
