CD Projekt Red Offers To Help Gamescom Theft Victim As Industry Shows Its Support
Following reports of equipment thefts at Gamescom, the gaming industry has rallied to support affected developers. CD Projekt Red and marketing consultant Indie Game Joe stepped up to assist indie developer Ryan Laley after his booth was targeted, while publisher iam8bit also reported stolen laptops containing early game demos despite onsite security.
The annual Gamescom convention is widely celebrated as a premier venue for showcasing highly anticipated video games, but the atmosphere at this year's event has been marred by reports of theft. Multiple exhibitors have come forward to reveal that their booths were targeted, resulting in the loss of essential hardware and demo equipment. Despite these disheartening setbacks, the gaming community and major industry figures have quickly mobilized to offer financial aid, replacement gear, and moral support to those affected.
Among the victims is independent developer Ryan Laley, who shared on social media that his equipment had been stolen directly from his Gamescom booth. Laley expressed deep distress over the incident, describing the sudden loss of his hardware as a severe blow both financially and mentally. The stolen items represented a significant setback for the developer, who was at the convention to promote his upcoming project.
In the wake of Laley's public disclosure, prominent industry members stepped forward to offer assistance. CD Projekt Red, the acclaimed studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, reached out to the indie developer via social media. Using terminology inspired by their futuristic RPG, the studio expressed solidarity with Laley, stating that no fellow developer should have to rebuild from nothing, and offered to search their hardware archives to send replacement equipment his way.
In addition to the offer from CD Projekt Red, Laley received immediate financial backing from within the indie gaming community. Marketing consultant Indie Game Joe stepped in to donate the funds required to fully replace the stolen hardware. Laley expressed immense gratitude for this swift generosity, publicly thanking the consultant for being a champion for smaller creators and admitting he could barely keep up with typing out thank-you messages to everyone who offered support.
Following his donation, Indie Game Joe encouraged the public to channel their support toward Laley's creative endeavors. He urged gamers to visit the digital storefront page for Laley's upcoming game, Mimic, and add it to their wishlists. This call to action aimed to turn a negative event into a positive promotional opportunity for the independent title.
Unfortunately, Laley's experience was not an isolated incident at the convention. Publisher iam8bit also reported a significant security breach, revealing that two of its laptops had been stolen from its station in the business area hall overnight. According to the publisher, the theft occurred despite the active presence of Koelnmesse security staff, raising concerns about the event's overall security measures.
The loss was particularly disruptive for iam8bit because the stolen laptops contained early, playable builds of two upcoming titles. The machines were actively being used at the convention to demonstrate Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2 to attendees and partners. GameSpot has reached out to Gamescom organizers for an official statement regarding these security breaches, but no response had been received at the time of reporting.
